Creating an effective morning routine with depression

https://www.tevapharm.com/patients-and-caregivers/all-stories/creating-an-eff…

## Takeaway When creating your morning routine, keep it simple. It doesn’t need to be perfect. Focus on one tactic first and build consistency. You don’t want to overwhelm yourself to the point of anxiety (the irony here is too real). Alongside working with my doctor, managing my depression and anxiety includes keeping myself healthy. Get enough sleep, eat well, drink lots of water, and find ways to express yourself and clear your mind. And don’t forget to move your body and sweat often! [...] 1. Get out of bed as soon as you wake up. This will help you avoid dipping back into sleep (which may make you even more groggy than before) or staying in bed so long that you lose time for the rest of your routine. Don’t give in to the urge to hit the snooze button! 2. Drink a big glass of water right after waking up. If you’re well-hydrated, you may be less likely to feel that morning grogginess that can put you in a bad mood. [...] 3. Integrate a short session of meditation, yoga, stretching, or cardio exercise at the start of your day. You can do this in your lounge or garden (if you have one). It will help wake you up, get you grounded in your body, and avoid missing exercise or mindfulness for lack of time or energy later in the day. I’ve found that even as little as 5 or 10 minutes can make a big difference!

Morning Routine for Depression: Could It Help?

https://www.everydayhealth.com/hs/major-depression-resource-center/britts-mor…

“A morning drink for many people has as much to do with ritual as the drink itself, and lets their brains know the day is starting,” says Lee. Coffee is a favorite for many because of its energizing effects. But if caffeine makes you jittery or anxious, there are other beverages you can try to start your day, says Lee: Decaf or low-caf tea (like herbal varieties) Hot cocoa Warm nonfat milk Green smoothie with avocado, kiwi, or other healthy green produce [...] One of the best ways to ensure you’ll stick to your new routine, says Lee, is to prepare for each morning by getting enough sleep the night before. Try shutting off screens an hour before bedtime and having a cup of calming decaffeinated tea to help you get to sleep faster, she says. ### 2. Wake Up With a Sunrise Alarm Clock [...] ## Why a Morning Routine Can Help You Manage Depression A morning routine can have plenty of benefits for people with depression, says Dr. Lee. For starters, a set schedule means there are fewer decisions to make about how to start your day. “If you haven’t planned ahead, then everything you’re faced with in the morning is a decision you have to make quickly, which can add to stress and depression,” says Lee.

Organizing your day with planned patterns of behavior provides a sense of security that can reduce mental fatigue, decrease stress and boost your emotional wellness. Research shows that people with structured routines have lower levels of anxiety and depression than people who live without routines. [...] Any aerobic activity, such as walking, running or swimming, can provide a mental health boost, and you don't have to move for long to see the benefits. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), walking for just 10 to 15 minutes daily may lower your risk of depression by 18%. Physical activity releases serotonin and dopamine — two feel-good chemicals in your brain. Every time you move your body, you also set yourself up for improved focus while reducing stress. [...] Scheduling digital breaks into your day can reduce your overall screen time, which may improve depression symptoms, stress, sleep quality and overall well-being. Research shows that adolescents who are on devices for two hours or more daily during weekdays double their risk for anxiety and are four times more likely to experience emotional and behavioral difficulties.
