# Simplifying the co-op work permit requirement for post-secondary international students. **Ottawa, April 9, 2026**—Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada is working to streamline its processes and maximize efficiency, while continuing to strengthen the International Student Program and deliver excellent client services. As of April 1, 2026, eligible post-secondary international students no longer need a separate work permit to participate in student work placements required by their program, such as co-op placements and internships. Students may work for employers approved by their designated learning institution as part of their program requirements. This change simplifies the administrative process for students by requiring only one permit to complete a single study program. It does not increase the number of students who are authorized to work or affect temporary resident volumes; it simply removes an administrative step that is no longer necessary. International students with pending decisions on their co-op work permit applications will not need to take any action. IRCC will withdraw all eligible and active co-op work permit applications.

## Immigration with Rizwan Ul Haque's post. ### **Immigration with Rizwan Ul Haque**. 🇨🇦 Canada Updates Work Rules for International Students (2026) 🇨🇦. Canada has introduced an important update for international students, making it easier to study and gain work experience at the same time. International students in post-secondary programs no longer need a separate co-op work permit for internships, co-ops, or practicums. ✅ Work placement must be part of the program. 📌 Students who already applied for a co-op work permit may withdraw their application. The Canadian immigration department (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) is also considering further improvements:. • Work permission for students waiting on study permit extensions. • Work authorization for graduates waiting for their PGWP decision. • Simplifying rules so one permit covers both study and work. Graduates can already work full-time while waiting for their Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) decision (if eligible), helping reduce career gaps. 💬 Planning to study or work in Canada?

# Canada International Student Work Authorization: What You Need to Know in 2026. International students in Canada can work on campus, off campus, and in mandatory co-op placements under their study permit — but the rules are more layered than most people realize, and they changed significantly in 2024 and 2026. At Kingwell Immigration Law, we work with international students and graduates whose work authorization has been put at risk through permit refusals, unauthorized work complications, or PGWP eligibility issues that threaten their path to permanent residence. Whether you are just arriving in Canada or approaching graduation, our team is here to help you protect your status and plan your next steps with confidence. International students who hold a valid study permit from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) can generally work on campus without a separate work permit. If your situation involves a leave, a program change, or a gap in enrollment, our team can help you assess whether your work authorization is still valid and what steps to take.

# Canada Softens Work Permit Requirements In Boost For International Students. * Details of Canada’s new co-op work permit rule. Canada has removed a key administrative hurdle for international students, allowing many to complete mandatory work placements without applying for a separate permit. International students at the post-secondary level no longer need a co-op work permit to take part in required work placements such as internships or co-op terms. Instead, students can complete these placements using only their study permit, provided the placement is an official requirement of their programme and approved by their designated learning institution. ### Do international students still need a co-op work permit in Canada? No, post-secondary international students no longer need a co-op work permit if the placement is required for their programme. Eligible students must be full-time post-secondary learners at a designated learning institution, enrolled in a programme of at least six months that leads to a credential, with a required work placement making up no more than 50% of their studies.
