# Work in Canada after your studies. As an international student who graduated from a Canadian college or university, there are different options for you to live and work here. Graduates from certain post-secondary schools can get work experience in Canada with the post-graduation work permit (PGWP). The work experience you get through the program may help support your application to become a permanent resident of Canada. The length of your PGWP depends on the level and duration of your study program, as well as the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first. Learn more about the PGWP from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):. * Work in Canada after you graduate: About the post-graduation work permit. Canada | International Student Income | BAL Immigration Law

Canadian officials **announced** that the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applications will be raised effective Jan. 1, 2024. **Background:** The Canadian government recently **announced** reforms to the International Student Program, which created a new framework to recognize learning institutions that provide top-quality services and support, including housing, to international students. This was in response to growing concerns about the rising cost of living and affordable housing shortages. **BAL Analysis:** Government officials have stated that the current financial requirement has not kept up with the cost of living over time, and the revised requirements are designed to better protect international students by preventing student vulnerability and exploitation. # Canada International Student Work Authorization: What You Need to Know in 2026. International students in Canada can work on campus, off campus, and in mandatory co-op placements under their study permit — but the rules are more layered than most people realize, and they changed significantly in 2024 and 2026. At Kingwell Immigration Law, we work with international students and graduates whose work authorization has been put at risk through permit refusals, unauthorized work complications, or PGWP eligibility issues that threaten their path to permanent residence. Whether you are just arriving in Canada or approaching graduation, our team is here to help you protect your status and plan your next steps with confidence. International students who hold a valid study permit from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) can generally work on campus without a separate work permit. If your situation involves a leave, a program change, or a gap in enrollment, our team can help you assess whether your work authorization is still valid and what steps to take.
