# Canada raises minimum income required of international students. Marc Miller, minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship, announced Thursday that starting January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants will be raised so that international students are financially prepared for life in Canada. Speaking to the Daily Press in November, Maulik Panchal, an advocate for the local Hindu community in Timmins, said students from India are attempting to live on $815 a month, so they can save $1,000 a month to pay for their second year’s tuition. ##### Canada raises minimum income required of international students Back to video. However, Thursday’s announcement would seem to put the onus on students to be more realistic about the cost of living in Canada. “With the long-overdue increase to the cost-of-living threshold, students arriving in Canada will be on a stronger financial footing as they begin their studies,” the statement read.
