6 technologies to help the world adapt to climate change
AI, drones, Earth observation, advanced computing, IoT and virtual and augmented reality are vital for climate adaptation. Here's why.
AI, drones, Earth observation, advanced computing, IoT and virtual and augmented reality are vital for climate adaptation. Here's why.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has an important role to play in climate solutions and climate change adaptation, alongside other technologies like cloud computing. Despite its drawbacks, artificial intelligence (AI) has an important role to play in both climate solutions and climate change adaptation, alongside other technologies like cloud computing. Through its GridRewards app and SmartKit AI software, users can plan their energy consumption to avoid peak use times — leading to fewer carbon emissions from peaker power plants. While it’s not feasible to build a new grid from scratch, technology-driven climate solutions can hep. IBM recently partnered with NASA to develop new AI models capable of interpreting satellite data from a specific geographic location, learning from it, and applying patterns and predictions to real-world circumstances to help communities combat and adapt to climate change. Although IBM’s role in Kenyan sustainability efforts is relatively new, it shows that climate solutions can be measurable. ## Moving forward with AI and technology-driven climate solutions.

The Climate Technology Progress Report 2024 Unleashing Renewable Energy for Ambitious NDCs The United Nations Environment Programme Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC) would like to thank the Steering Committee members, the lead and contributing authors, reviewers and the project coordination team for their contribution to the development of this report. To accurately assess the financial needs of technology develop-ment and transfer for tripling renewable energy capacity, it is essential to estimate the required investment volumes by region and improve data on the cost of capital, which serves as an early indicator for climate technology deployment. Building on to these as well as other major efforts, this 2024 edition of the Climate Technology Progress Report (CTPR) focuses on renewable energy technologies and continues to build on the systems approach set out in previous years’ CTPRs (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP] Copenhagen Climate Centre [CCC] and UNFCCC Techni-cal Executive Committee [TEC] 2022; UNEP CCC, Climate Technology Centre and Network [CTCN] and UNFCCC TEC 2023) for assessing progress on technology development and transfer. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/ business-and-politics/article/opening-new-markets-for-clean-energy-the-role-of-project-developers-in-the-global-diffusion-of-renewable-en-ergy-technologies/D471A68ECAF2F5A6B8812457D68848AE.

Image 5: 10 climate tech innovations that give us hope for 2024. And throughout 2023, we saw the energy transition begin to unfold across the economy, from a new factory making jet fuel from CO2 to a cargo ship running on green methanol made from food waste. A gas utility is helping a neighborhood shift to a geothermal heat**. A new factory is scaling up production of CO2-based jet fuel**. At a new factory under construction in Washington State, a startup called Twelve will soon begin using captured CO2, water, and renewable electricity to make jet fuel that could eventually compete on cost with conventional jet fuel. After reports about the health and climate risks posed by cooking with gas stoves, a growing number of people—including professional chefs—are starting to switch to induction stoves instead.
Renewable energy continued to grow in 2024, and there were other hopeful developments in technologies aiming to reverse the rise in greenhouse gas emissions.
