Cloud seeding - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_seeding

Based on its findings, Stanford University ecologist Jerry Bradley said: "I think you can squeeze out a little more snow or rain in some places under some conditions, but that's quite different from a program claiming to reliably increase precipitation." Data similar to that of the NAS study was acquired in a separate study conducted by the Wyoming Weather Modification Pilot Project, but whereas the NAS study concluded that "it is difficult to show clearly that cloud seeding has a very large effect", the WWMPP study concluded that "seeding could augment the snowpack by a maximum of 3% over an entire season.". In 2016, Jeff Tilley, director of weather modification at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, claimed that new technology and research has produced reliable results that make cloud seeding a dependable and affordable water supply practice for many regions. **^** "Weather Modification Association (WMA) Position on the Environmental Impact of using Silver Iodide as a Cloud Seeding Agent" (PDF).

How China became fixated on cloud seeding

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260203-why-china-is-pushing-controversia…

Weather modification has become "a vital project for the scientific development of atmospheric cloud and water resources, serving the country and benefiting the people", Li Jiming, director of China's Weather Modification Center, said at the time of the 2025 spring rain operation. In China, and globally, cloud seeding for both experiments and practical use is most commonly done in the mountains to produce snowpack, mainly as snow is easier to see and measure than rain. There's another problem with cloud seeding, though: scientists say China simply may not be producing the rain it says it is. "The problem with these cloud seeding programmes is that most of them are done by the government, like in China, like in the UAE," says Friedrich."But there's really very little independent analysis.". Scientists now fear that rising droughts worldwide due to climate change will fuel uptake of cloud seeding technology, but not the research needed to show when and where it works cost effectively.

Cloud seeding: Why more countries are turning to weather ... - CNBC

# Making it rain: Why more and more countries are turning to cloud seeding. * Countries are increasingly embracing the controversial practice of cloud seeding as global water demand continues to rise. * Iran recently sprayed clouds with chemicals as part of a push to boost rainfall to tackle the country’s worst drought in decades, while India unsuccessfully experimented with cloud seeding to combat air pollution in Delhi. Augustus Doricko, CEO of Rainmaker, a California-based cloud seeding company, said there are two dynamics at play that seem to be rekindling people's interest in the technology — both in the U.S. and across the world. Yet, despite its name, Doricko said the company's cloud seeding projects are mostly designed to make it snow. "The other concept of why more countries may be embracing cloud seeding technologies is that it's currently one of the only options to enhance increasingly stressed localized water resources or help mitigate regional air pollution by using Earth's natural atmospheric systems as a viable water source," McDonough said.

Weather Modification Association – Professional organization for the ...

Weather Modification can be both planned, as is the case in cloud seeding, or inadvertent, for example, when pollution affects visibility. Planned (deliberate) weather modification is also commonly know as cloud seeding, cloud modification, or atmospheric water management. Cloud seeding, or commonly referred to as weather modification, is the treatment of individual clouds or cloud systems in an attempt to achieve a desired beneficial effect, including fog and hail mitigation, and additional precipitation in the form of either rain or snow. Published scientific literature clearly shows no environmentally harmful effects arising from cloud seeding with silver iodide (AgI) aerosols have been observed, nor would they be expected to occur. Based on this work, the WMA finds silver iodide is environmentally safe as it is currently being used in the conduct of cloud seeding programs. **In order to become certified, you must be a member of the Weather Modification Association.**.
