# Indigenous Youth Leading the Way. Indigenous youth show their pride at the 17th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in April. Indigenous youth in particular continue to face racism and discrimination and are marginalized in society, but when they have a sense of belonging and a strong cultural identity they become resilient, powerful individuals. It is critical to restore leadership from the erosion of their traditional knowledge practices and habitat so that they can begin to create a more sustainable interdependent system for the coming generations. 2018 was a special year for the youth at the UN Permanent Forum because it was the 10-year anniversary of the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus. It is entirely volunteer based; for the participants there is a deeper sense of responsibility and no other choice but to continue the work of their ancestors. The confidence is based on our knowledge and experiences with our own culture; that is the base from where we can speak up.
The Native Youth Leadership Program (NYLP) creates opportunities for Native youth to participate in, network at, and be empowered by attending the annual Bioneers Conference and world-renowned Indigenous Forum. The NYLP offers scholarships to Native youth to participate in all aspects of the Bioneers conference and Indigenous Forum as honored guests. The program also presents a three-day “Native Youth Leadership Track” with cultural arts and leadership activities tailored to the unique needs of Native American youth, including talking circles, leadership development workshops, art-making, and mentorship with Indigenous role models. We founded the Native Youth Leadership Program in 2011 to provide Native youth with a safe space to observe, interact with, and learn from Native mentors and each other, as well as with the larger Bioneers community. In 2024, the NYLP hosted 100+ participants with generous support from donors who helped us to provide Native youth attendees and chaperones with transportation, lodging, healthy food and a gift bag in addition to conference registration and programming.
