# Congress Provides Record Funding for Fusion Energy. The Fusion Energy Sciences program within the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, which funds most of the U.S. government’s fusion research, would receive $763 million for the coming year, $50 million (about 7%) above 2022 funding levels, and $40 million above what the Biden Administration requested. Even though this funding is the most that the U.S. government has ever allocated to fusion energy research, there is broad agreement in Congress, the fusion science community, and the private fusion industry that more funding is needed to to accelerate towards a fusion power plant. In the CHIPS and Sciences Act, Congress authorized funding for Fusion Energy Sciences at $1.025 billion for 2023, so the allocation of $763 million is only 74% of the funding necessary to achieve the aims laid out by Congress.

James Risch (R-ID) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and among its members are Mumgaard and the directors of Lawrence Livermore National Lab and Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. Much of the money would go toward building facilities needed to test promising fusion technologies, Mumgaard said. Troy Carter, director of the fusion energy division at Oak Ridge National Lab, also said the money could go toward building key facilities needed to qualify materials that can withstand neutron bombardment within fusion reactors and to demonstrate ways of breeding tritium fuel within the reactors, a step to closing the fuel cycle. Witnesses applauded the fusion workforce bill introduced in August by Committee Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-CA), which would recommend appropriating $20 million for the National Science Foundation and $10 million for DOE each year through 2030 to fund fusion-related education, workforce development, and research opportunities, as well as a coordinating hub.

If sufficiently resourced and authorized by Congress, this new Office of Fusion will represent a critical step toward a public fusion program that matches the needs of today’s fusion industry, is able to bridge remaining gaps to commercialization, and ensures the U.S. fusion energy sector remains competitive on a global stage. In this blog, we examine how the Office of Fusion can accelerate putting commercial fusion power on the grid by building the infrastructure to overcome critical remaining science and technology gaps, as well as funding public-private partnerships needed to enable U.S. fusion companies to compete on a level playing field with international competitors. By focusing on closing shared science and technology gaps, expanding public-private partnerships to attract private capital, and allowing U.S. fusion companies to compete on a level playing field with international competitors, the Office of Fusion can position the United States to be the first nation to put fusion power plants on the grid.

# Fusion Energy: Additional Planning Would Strengthen DOE's Efforts to Facilitate Commercialization. The Department of Energy (DOE), led by the Office of Science's Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) program, has taken steps to facilitate fusion energy commercialization through public-private partnerships. DOE officials indicated that the relatively limited scale of investment in initiatives to facilitate commercialization largely reflects the immature state of fusion energy technology, which GAO reported on in March 2023. Although DOE has initiated planning efforts to facilitate fusion energy commercialization, whether DOE sustains these efforts is uncertain. Finalizing and implementing ongoing planning efforts would better position DOE to make progress toward accelerating fusion energy commercialization and meeting the U.S. goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. GAO was asked to examine DOE's steps to reach the federal vision to accelerate fusion energy commercialization. GAO recommends that the Office of Science finalize and implement ongoing fusion energy planning efforts, including by specifying roles and responsibilities, responding to identified risks, and detailing metrics and timelines for its initiatives.
