Commercialization Challenges Facing Fusion: Perspectives from an ...

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10894-023-00360-0

As the Duke Energy report acknowledges, that milestone depends on progress beyond proving the plasma physics work, namely integration of the fusion energy source with a practical commercial plant for energy generation and the demonstration of performance to commercial customers. Under this duality, commercialization of fusion energy requires parallel maturation of the technology and customer readiness (Fig. 1 below). A commercial fusion plant will require transfer of primary energy away from the plasma for conversion into heat, electricity or other desired product. The availability of the materials, components, skilled workforce, and qualified suppliers will constrain the rate and extent of commercial deployment of a new entrant technology like fusion, both in terms of the scarcity of unique supply chain elements that need to be established and the scarcity shared supply chain elements that need to be expanded to satisfy competing demand. While customers are not procuring fusion plants yet, electric utilities and other energy end-users and producers are looking for technology options that can meet growing future energy demands while also satisfying increasing constraints on natural resources and environmental impact.

Fusion Energy: Additional Planning Would Strengthen DOE's Efforts ...

# Fusion Energy: Additional Planning Would Strengthen DOE's Efforts to Facilitate Commercialization. The Department of Energy (DOE), led by the Office of Science's Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) program, has taken steps to facilitate fusion energy commercialization through public-private partnerships. DOE officials indicated that the relatively limited scale of investment in initiatives to facilitate commercialization largely reflects the immature state of fusion energy technology, which GAO reported on in March 2023. Although DOE has initiated planning efforts to facilitate fusion energy commercialization, whether DOE sustains these efforts is uncertain. Finalizing and implementing ongoing planning efforts would better position DOE to make progress toward accelerating fusion energy commercialization and meeting the U.S. goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. GAO was asked to examine DOE's steps to reach the federal vision to accelerate fusion energy commercialization. GAO recommends that the Office of Science finalize and implement ongoing fusion energy planning efforts, including by specifying roles and responsibilities, responding to identified risks, and detailing metrics and timelines for its initiatives.

Nuclear Fusion: Accelerating Pathways to Commercialization

https://cleantech.com/nuclear-fusion-accelerating-pathways-to-commercialization/

This is incredibly significant because reaching net energy gain, where more energy is released from the reaction than put in, is the key principle behind sustaining the fusion reactions and harnessing the released energy to create electricity. Although fusion can easily seem like a panacea to the worlds’ energy crisis and reliance on fossil fuels, it is not without its challenges. These achievements have driven further investments into the sector, accelerating the timelines for fusion companies to reach net energy gain and commercial scale. As shown in Figure 2, many companies are expecting to reach net energy gain in the next three-to-four years (Fusion Industry Association Survey, 2022) with Helion expecting their net energy demonstration to occur in 2024 and Commonwealth Fusion Systems and TAE expecting to complete their demonstration facilities by 2025. As the landscape of innovators in the nuclear fusion industry grows, various business models and component suppliers for technologies like liquid lithium blankets and high temperature superconducting magnets will also continue to grow and develop.
