Nuclear Fusion: Accelerating Pathways to Commercialization | Cleantech Group

https://cleantech.com/nuclear-fusion-accelerating-pathways-to-commercialization/

This is incredibly significant because reaching net energy gain, where more energy is released from the reaction than put in, is the key principle behind sustaining the fusion reactions and harnessing the released energy to create electricity. Although fusion can easily seem like a panacea to the worlds’ energy crisis and reliance on fossil fuels, it is not without its challenges. These achievements have driven further investments into the sector, accelerating the timelines for fusion companies to reach net energy gain and commercial scale. As shown in Figure 2, many companies are expecting to reach net energy gain in the next three-to-four years (Fusion Industry Association Survey, 2022) with Helion expecting their net energy demonstration to occur in 2024 and Commonwealth Fusion Systems and TAE expecting to complete their demonstration facilities by 2025. As the landscape of innovators in the nuclear fusion industry grows, various business models and component suppliers for technologies like liquid lithium blankets and high temperature superconducting magnets will also continue to grow and develop.

Toward Commercial Fusion Energy: Considerations for Congress

https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R48866

16 , https://www.nationalacademies.org/read/13371/chapter/1 .")This approach is used, for example, in the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Department of Energy (DOE) Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.20While the NIF is intended primarily for research to improve stewardship of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile (see "DOE Weapons Programs Research Related to Fusion"), it ha s also demonstrat ed fusion ignition several times, beginning i n December 2022.21 Although each ignition lasted for less than one nanosecond, these demonstrations ha ve increased interest in inertial confinement designs for future power plants.22According to some experts, for lasers to be used in a commercial power plant, they would need to be more efficient and have higher repetition rates than current models. For example, the DOE Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E) also supports some fusion energy projects,54 , Power Generation: Nuclear Fusion , 2025 , https://arpa-e.energy.gov/programs-and-initiatives/search-all-projects/complexion-engineered-nanocrystalline-tungsten-alloy-plasma-facing-materials-long-pulse-tokamak-operation .") along with other projects across the full range of energy technologies.
