Solar geoengineering seeks to cool Earth’s temperature by reflecting incoming sunlight back into space, but effects on the environment and public health are uncertain. * Solar geoengineering methods might mitigate Earth’s rising temperatures, but effects are highly uncertain. * More research and field testing of solar geoengineering methods would improve understanding of effects. **What is it?** Solar geoengineering, also referred to as solar radiation modification, includes several proposed methods to reflect sunlight back into space. **How does it work?** Two atmospheric methods of solar geoengineering are generally considered the most feasible and cost effective. Other experiments, including one in the U.S., have been cancelled due to public concerns about safety or the ethics of solar geoengineering use. * **Unknown consequences.** Potentially harmful effects on human health and the environment from solar geoengineering use have been identified but are poorly understood. * What information is needed to inform public policy discussions about the use of solar geoengineering, such as the effects and ethical implications, and how might policymakers facilitate its collection?

## Advances in Space Research. # Roadmap toward a Planetary Sunshade for Space-based Solar Geoengineering. A roadmap for a space-based solar geoengineering program is proposed, aiming for a reversible Planetary Sunshade System to mitigate global warming. This roadmap includes the main aspects to address the full development, considering the involved technologies, launchers, and swarm logistics at the photo-gravitational L1 point. This paper introduces a technology roadmap for developing a Planetary Sunshade System: a space-based solar geoengineering concept designed for reversible Solar Radiation Management. The proposed roadmap is a structured, multi-phase plan from early technology demonstrations to full deployment at the Sun–Earth/Moon Center of Mass photo-gravitational Lagrange point. The roadmap addresses critical aspects such as solar-sail design, in-space assembly, swarm logistics, and launch infrastructure, while outlining milestones for initial operations by 2040 and full capability by 2080. By integrating technological, logistical, and programmatic considerations, this roadmap serves as a framework for assessing feasibility and guiding international collaboration on space-based climate interventions.

While academics can apply for external grants to support their research, “the difference now is that there are some places where universities—and maybe the University of Chicago is the most important single place—are actually putting up their own money and starting real programs themselves,” said geophysicist David Keith, the founding director of the Chicago initiative who previously researched geoengineering at Harvard. > “I think I had like the third one in existence,” he said of his doctorate in Climate Science, which he graduated with from the University of Bristol after completing his 2012 thesis entitled “Climatic effects of solar radiation management geoengineering.”. But the academic approach to solar geoengineering research is pivotal, scientists said, because university researchers are investigating pertinent questions about the feasibility and safety of geoengineering methods, rather than advocating for their deployment or use to satisfy investors. > “I see SRM research as a moral responsibility,” said Patel, who now works with the African Climate and Development Initiative researching geoengineering.
