The IAEA has supported fusion energy research since its inception and helps Member States exchange and build knowledge on fusion science and technology. ## International fusion activities and the IAEA’s role. Controlled nuclear fusion and plasma physics research is currently carried out in more than 50 IAEA Member States. Since this will require large, complex and expensive devices to address reactor-relevant physics and technology challenges, international collaboration on fusion research and development is needed. The IAEA fosters international collaboration and coordination to help close the existing gaps in physics, technology and regulation and move forward in developing the peaceful use of fusion energy. The IAEA hosts a variety of fusion-related forums, including the biennial Fusion Energy Conference, a series of workshops on the DEMO project, and many technical meetings. ### United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority Designated as IAEA Collaborating Centre for Fusion Research.
Created in 2007, the ST TCP aims to enhance the effectiveness and productivity of fusion energy science and technology by strengthening co-operation among spherical torus research programmes and facilities; contributing to and extending the scientific and technology database of toroidal confinement concepts to the spherical torus physics regime; and providing a scientific and technological basis for the successful development of fusion power using the spherical torus. The CTP TCP supports the development of fusion energy by contributing to the physics basis of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), and DEMO (a proposed nuclear fusion power station that is intended to build upon the ITER experimental nuclear fusion reactor) design optimisation. The CTP TCP provides a forum for tokamak programmes of the ITER Members to co-ordinate tokamak research by carrying out scientific and technological exchanges, holding workshops and meetings for the purpose of advancing the tokamak concept in the context of fusion energy, and supporting ITER physics and technology needs.

In this third edition of the WFO – launched today at the joint opening of the Second Ministerial Meeting of the IAEA World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) and the 30th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC) in Chengdu, China - a new chapter explores the potential longterm contribution of fusion energy to the global electricity generation mix through the end of the century. The WFEG, launched in 2024, serves as a global platform to unite stakeholders from industry, governments, academia, regulators and public to accelerate the research, development, demonstration and deployment of fusion energy.
