When people look toward minimalism as a lifestyle, they often see only the act of decluttering. But ultimately, minimalism involves the benefits we experience once we’re on the other side of decluttering. Minimalism helped me untether from that life—a life focused on material “success.” Once I regained control, I made time to concentrate on my health. This increased focus allowed me to improve my diet, exercise, and sleep, which minimized my stress and increased my happiness. This was the initial benefit that led me to minimalism: financial freedom. Minimalism and living a minimalist lifestyle is on the rise. Although I had vaguely heard of minimalism in the past, I first became really interested in it when I stumbled upon the *The Minimalists’* podcast with Joshua Fields Milburn and Ryan Nicodemus. It may not have been coined minimalism (or voluntary simplicity), but the idea of living simply with only the things you really need has been around for centuries. Very few people seem to be *consciously* living minimally these days.
