By the end of 2024, even casual observers of technology headlines could see the excitement building around quantum computing–a technology that represents a fundamental shift in how we process information, applying quantum physics to solve problems far beyond the reach of even the most powerful classical computers. While many people still believe we are three to five years out from true commercial viability for quantum computing, as participants in the process, we respectfully disagree. In 2022, I compared the roadmaps of various vendors of quantum computers. New to quantum computing or unsure what physical or logical qubits are? For physical qubits, the roadmaps from various vendors are as follows:. A logical qubit is made of many physical qubits using quantum error correction. A conservative physical-to-logical qubit ratio is 1000:1, which suggests that quantum advantage is expected around 2030, as 75–100 logical qubits are needed to achieve quantum advantage. Vendor roadmaps for logical qubits for different modalities from Google, IBM, Infleqtion, IonQ, IQM, Quantinuum, and QuEra. Quantum advantage is expected near the end of the decade, in line with the estimation based on physical qubits and quantum error correction.

IBM roadmap to quantum-centric supercomputers (Updated 2024)

Two years ago, we issued our first draft of that map to take our first steps: our ambitious three-year plan to develop quantum computing technology, called our [development roadmap](https://research.ibm.com/blog/ibm-quantum-roadmap). We put the [first quantum computer](https://research.ibm.com/blog/quantum-five-years) on the cloud in 2016, and in 2017, we introduced an open source software development kit for programming these quantum computers, called [Qiskit](http:qiskit.org). We debuted the first integrated quantum computer system, called the [IBM Quantum System One](https://research.ibm.com/interactive/system-one/), in 2019, then in 2020 we released our [development roadmap](https://research.ibm.com/blog/quantum-development-roadmap) showing how we planned to mature quantum computers into a commercial technology. Earlier this year, we launched the [Qiskit Runtime Services](https://research.ibm.com/blog/qiskit-runtime-for-useful-quantum-computing) with primitives: pre-built programs that allow algorithm developers easy access to the outputs of quantum computations without requiring intricate understanding of the hardware. We think that parallelized quantum processors with classical communication will be able to bring about quantum advantage even sooner, and a recent paper suggests a [path forward](https://www.research.ibm.com/blog/circuit-knitting-with-classical-communication).
