highlights five SDG indicators that have the greatest dependence on DHS data. Since 2015, 70 per cent of the data points on contraceptive use (SDG indicator 5.6.1) and experiences of sexual violence (SDG 16.2.3) have come from the DHS. It has also provided over 50 per cent of the data points on female genital mutilation (SDG 5.3.2), the urban population living in slums (SDG 11.1.1) and the population living in households with basic services (SDG 1.4.1). In 2025, a comprehensive review of the global indicator framework – endorsed by the Statistical Commission – introduced key updates to better reflect today’s challenges, including climate change, inequalities and digital transformation. These changes have improved the ability of countries to track progress and to develop evidence-based policies. [...] When the SDG monitoring framework was first established in 2016, only one third of indicators had good data coverage, and 39 per cent lacked internationally agreed methodologies. Today, almost 70 per cent have good coverage, and all 234 indicators now have well-established methodologies. Since 2016, the Sustainable Development Report (SDR) has provided the most up-to-date data available to track and rank the performance of all UN member states on the SDGs. Eighty years after the creation of the UN system, the report also provides improved and updated measures to track countries' efforts to support UN-based multilateralism. In total, more than 200,000 individual data points are used to produce 200+ country and regional SDG profiles. This year's edition was authored by a group of [...] statistical offices (NSOs) and international organizations, NGOs, academics, and private-sector organizations that provided comments. The SDG Index and Dashboards combines data and analyses produced by international organizations, civil-society organizations, and research centers. since the inception of the SDGs in 2015. The three main reports that have quantitatively assessed the progress of SDG data collection are The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023 (United Nations, 2023), the UN Pulse of Progress report (Goessmann et al., 2023) and Tracking the Sustainable Development Goals from the World Bank (Dang and Serajuddin, 2020). The first report is less comprehensive and includes a brief analysis of the number of data points in the United Nations’ Sustainable [...] reporting. This is particularly relevant considering 27% of all SDG data is modelled (Development Initiatives, 2023).
