Sustainability | Special Issue : Sustainable Urban Planning Strategies for Addressing Climate Change

https://www.mdpi.com/journal/sustainability/special_issues/sustainable_urban_…

The Special Issue can inform urban planning policies and practices that can help mainstream climate change adaptation and mitigation into land use planning within cities. Cities can reduce climate change risks and impacts by integrating climate change mitigation and adaptation with land-use planning and urban governance and in synergy with overall socioeconomic and physical development objectives. Sustainable and integrated urban planning strategies focusing on the built environment, urban form and structure, infrastructure, transportation, and urban greening can help decrease susceptibility and exposure to climate change and increase resilience, human welfare, and environmental quality. This Special Issue seeks to showcase a range of innovative urban planning schemes that are climate-oriented and geared toward achieving transformative urbanization and sustainable cities. Scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students are invited to contribute to this Special Issue and present original research focusing on effective, long-term, integrated strategies and approaches for climate change mitigation and adaptation within the built environment from both the global North and South.

how does urban planning contribute to climate change? | Clarity

https://www.clarity.io/blog/how-does-urban-planning-contribute-to-climate-change

Urban planning decisions influence how cities grow, impacting emissions and resilience to climate impacts. * **Mitigation**: Urban planners design walkable communities and promote public transportation to reduce vehicle emissions. By implementing environmental master plans, cities can reduce emissions and enhance resilience, making urban planning a critical tool in the global climate strategy. Smart city technologies, real-time data monitoring, and decision-support tools offer urban planners the ability to make informed, data-driven decisions. Exploring the trends in the Smart City industry, such as citizen empowerment and sustainability, can help urban planners understand how to improve resource efficiency and sustainability in urban areas. Leveraging innovative approaches to improve air quality in urban settings ensures that urban areas can adapt to climate challenges while promoting sustainability. Additionally, understanding the impact of air quality management in urban planning can further enhance city resilience. Urban planning drives climate change solutions through city design. By integrating air quality goals into development strategies, cities can reduce pollution at the source, improve public health, and support long-term sustainability.

## Top Menu. ## Main navigation. # Planning for climate change: Guide - A strategic, values-based approach for urban planners. This report was developed for city planners to better understand, assess and take action on climate change at the local level. Specifically targeted to the needs of planners and allied professionals in low and middle-income countries where the challenges of planning for climate change are particularly high. The guide's strategic, values based planning framework: - promotes a participatory planning process that integrates local participation and good decision-making. - provides practical tools for addressing climate change through different urban planning processes. - supports the "mainstreaming" of climate change actions into other local government policy instruments. ## Knowledge. ## Get involved. ## Governance. ## Media centre. ## Connect. ©  2012-2026 United Nations Human Settlements Programme. ## Footer menu.

Urban planning for climate resilience: Adapting cities to challenges

https://www.ie.edu/uncover-ie/urban-planning-for-climate-resilience-adapting-…

# Urban planning for climate resilience: Adapting cities to challenges. Change is upon us, and cities now face the need for climate resilient urban planning. Urban climate change resilience comes down to how well cities anticipate and respond to natural hazards. ### What is climate resilient urban design? Climate resilient urban design is how we adapt our cities to the natural environment. When done well, climate resilient urban design can improve living standards while also enhance things like biodiversity or sustainability. ## What role does green infrastructure play in climate-resilient urban planning? As part of the green-blue city approach, sustainable water management is promoted through permeable surfaces, rainwater harvesting and water recycling in urban design. ## How are cities adapting to climate change through urban planning? If you’re passionate about climate-resilient urban planning, the Master in Architecture at IE School of Architecture & Design offers the perfect foundation, combining advanced architectural education with a deep focus on sustainability, innovation, and global impact.
