# A commercial fusion power plant by the early 2030s? David Cohen-Tanugi, Ph.D. Yesterday, Commonwealth Fusion System announced plans to build its first ARC fusion power plant in Chesterfield County, Va. in the early 2030s. Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), a spinoff from the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center, intends to produce 400 MW of steady power into the electrical grid starting in the early 2030s. Artist’s rendering of the first ARC power plant from Commonwealth Fusion Systems. This is because the working environment for materials inside a fusion power plant is uniquely harsh, with materials challenges that far exceed those for other energy technologies, including nuclear fission reactors. Recently several MIT researchers and I investigated the unsolved materials challenges for commercial fusion plants. Without these new materials, it simply won’t be possible to operate a commercially viable power plant. Only in the 2040s would we begin to see a first fleet of commercially viable fusion power plants that can deliver steady power and operate at a profit.

[PDF] Worldwide Timelines for Fusion Energy - National Academies

https://sites.nationalacademies.org/cs/groups/bpasite/documents/webpage/bpa_1…

In the U.S., design teams proposed the two-machine pathway, shown in Fig. 1, where the first machine would be a Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF) (based on tokamak (US-I pathway) [10], spherical tokamak (US-II pathway) [11], or stellarator [12]) followed by a DEMO which is envisioned to be identical in content (i.e., same confinement concept, materials and technologies), but varying in performance level (such as fusion power and availability). Figure 2 displays the current projection of the timelines for DEMO and first commercial power plant that might be built in the U.S. and other countries whose fusion programs are explicitly energy-oriented. The most optimistic projection is by China, followed by Korea, Europe, Japan, and the U.S. These approaches differ in the level of risk (two-step approach or single DEMO machine) and the degree of extrapolation beyond ITER (near-term or more advanced physics and technology for DEMO and/or power D-T Timeline for International Fusion Roadmaps Opera'on ITER (20 y) | ?

Nuclear Fusion Power

https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/current-and-future-generation/n…

In the USA, at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, where the first stellarators were built in 1951, construction on the NCSX stellerator was abandoned in 2008 due to cost overruns and lack of funding[2](https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/current-and-future-generation/nuclear-fusion-power#References "See Reference 2")[](https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/current-and-future-generation/nuclear-fusion-power). In the USA, the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) operated at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) from 1982 to 1997.[d](https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/current-and-future-generation/nuclear-fusion-power#Notes "See Note d")[](https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/current-and-future-generation/nuclear-fusion-power) In December 1993, TFTR became the first magnetic fusion device to perform extensive experiments with plasmas composed of D-T. Using its 192 laser beams, NIF is able to deliver more than 60 times the energy of any previous laser system to its target[e](https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/current-and-future-generation/nuclear-fusion-power#Notes "See Note e")[](https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/current-and-future-generation/nuclear-fusion-power). d.
