What's the carbon footprint of a wind turbine? » Yale Climate Connections

https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2021/06/whats-the-carbon-footprint-of-a-wi…

Compared to the pollution generated by fossil fuels, wind energy has the advantage. Thank you for this apparent attempt at a “gotcha” question, as it gives me the opportunity to reply with a resounding *yes!* People have studied, in detail, the amount of carbon pollution emitted during the life of a wind turbine. Next, they inventory the energy and raw materials consumed at each stage, such as the steel, fiberglass, and plastic needed during a wind turbine’s manufacturing, the diesel burned by ships and trucks in transporting turbine parts from factory to construction site, and the energy used during construction, operation, maintenance, and eventual deconstruction and recycling or disposal. With this information in hand, researchers calculate the carbon pollution produced during a wind turbine’s life cycle — in other words, its carbon footprint. #### The **carbon footprint of wind turbines**. In fact, it’s possible to calculate a carbon “payback” time for a wind turbine: the length of time it takes a turbine to produce enough clean electricity to make up for the carbon pollution generated during manufacture.

What is the carbon footprint of offshore wind? - Orsted - Ørsted

https://us.orsted.com/renewable-energy-solutions/offshore-wind/seven-facts-ab…

# What is the carbon footprint of offshore wind? But these are very small in comparison to emissions from fossil fuels – and vastly outweighed by the emissions saved by using offshore wind instead of fossil fuels. **The carbon saved throughout a wind turbine’s lifespan is up to 50 times greater than the emissions from its manufacture, construction, operation and decommissioning.**. When you divide the total emissions associated with a wind turbine by the amount of electricity it will produce in its lifetime, it works out at about 6 g of carbon dioxide for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity.1 By comparison, power generation based on fossil fuels involves burning more coal, oil or gas for every kWh of electricity, on top of the one-off carbon emissions from construction and decommissioning. Even though our activities as a renewable energy company do involve creating some carbon emissions, we’re on track to reduce the emissions intensity of our energy generation by 98% from 2006 levels.

Degree Project in Technology First cycle, 15 credits Climate Impact of Wind Turbine Production Emissions from Material and Energy Usage for Onshore and Offshore Wind Turbines JOEL ARNELO MARIA KOLTE Stockholm, Sweden 2023 1 Bachelor of Science Thesis EGI-2023 TRITA-ITM-EX 2023:192 Climate Impact of Wind Turbine Production Emissions from Material and Energy Usage for Onshore and Offshore Wind Turbines Joel Arnelo Maria Kolte Approved 2023-06-08 Examiner Jeevan Jayasuriya Supervisor Luka Smajila Commissioner Contact person 2 Abstract Wind power is a renewable energy source that is making great strides in the global energy sector. These regions have diverse energy mixes and given that raw material production and component manufacturing is highly energy intensive, exploring the variation of climate impact from wind turbine production based on location is crucial for gaining a comprehensive understanding of the climate impact associated with wind power on a global scale.

[PDF] Life cycle costs and carbon emissions of wind power

https://www.climatexchange.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/life_cycle_wind_…

A ClimateXChange report, Scotland, http://www.climatexchange.org.uk/files/4014/3325/2377/Main_Report_-_Life_Cycle_Costs_and_Carbon_Emissions_of_Offshore_Wind_Power.pdf Key Points  Capital cost is a major determinant of levelised costs but production levels and, particularly, financing assumptions are important determinants of headline costs; UK-studies showed above average levelised costs largely as a result of above average discount rates;  The cost of offshore wind is more uncertain and higher than onshore wind and other established technologies, but there is significant scope to reduce costs to comparable levels;  The introduction of wind power does result in impacts on the electricity system in terms of costs for balancing, transmission and backup, but these are modest at around 10% of the cost of wind energy;  The life cycle carbon emissions from both on- and offshore wind are very low at 15 and 12 gCO2eq/kWh, respectively;  Wind power variability affects system operation and reduces the efficiency of coal and gas generation, but the impact is modest, and emissions savings due to wind power will remain significant.
