# Canada | Simplified work permit requirements for postsecondary international students. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that eligible postsecondary international students no longer need a separate work permit to participate in co-op placements and internships required by their program. **This change is in effect as of April 1, 2026.** All pending co-op work permit applications will be automatically withdrawn by IRCC. Students are required to obtain a letter from their DLI confirming the work placement is a requirement of their study program. # Canada International Student Work Authorization: What You Need to Know in 2026. International students in Canada can work on campus, off campus, and in mandatory co-op placements under their study permit — but the rules are more layered than most people realize, and they changed significantly in 2024 and 2026. At Kingwell Immigration Law, we work with international students and graduates whose work authorization has been put at risk through permit refusals, unauthorized work complications, or PGWP eligibility issues that threaten their path to permanent residence. Whether you are just arriving in Canada or approaching graduation, our team is here to help you protect your status and plan your next steps with confidence. International students who hold a valid study permit from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) can generally work on campus without a separate work permit. If your situation involves a leave, a program change, or a gap in enrollment, our team can help you assess whether your work authorization is still valid and what steps to take.

# Working in Canada as an International Student. If your study permit has a condition that restricts you from working off-campus while you are in a non-eligible program, you can apply to change the conditions of your study permit once you have been accepted to a full-time program that meets the eligibility requirements to work off-campus. - If you are a newly admitted student in an undergraduate or diploma program and Summer is your first term of study, you are not eligible to work full time hours as you don't meet the eligibility criteria for full-time work during that term. If you are an undergraduate or diploma student you can work on-campus in your final term of study if you are a part-time student **only if you have maintained your full-time status in every other academic term of you program** and you're only studying part-time because you don't need a full-time course load to complete your program requirements.
