Estimating how much do hydroelectric dams cost is like predicting the weather – a lot of factors are at play. Building a dam can range from a few million dollars for a small, local project to upwards of $26 billion for massive, complex structures like China’s Three Gorges Dam. Understanding these influencing factors is key to evaluating the feasibility and return on investment for any hydropower project. * Understand the major cost drivers behind hydroelectric dam construction. * Learn how dam type, location, and capacity significantly impact project expenses. * Evaluate the economic viability of hydroelectric dams compared to alternative renewable energy sources. * Identify strategies for managing and mitigating the financial risks of dam construction. ## Decoding the Cost of Concrete and Construction. * **Capacity:** A dam’s power generation capacity directly influences the size and complexity of the structure, the number of turbines needed, and the scale of associated infrastructure. The scale of a hydroelectric project dramatically influences its cost per kilowatt.

# How Much Does it Cost to Build a New Hydropower Plant in Place of Destroyed Kakhovka Station? ## **A new hydroelectric power plant (HPP) will be built at the site of the old Kakhovka station that was recently destroyed by the invading Russian forces. Experts interviewed by the Ukrainian website Focus believe that a new 1 GW power plant will most likely be built on the site of the Kakhovka HPP, but such construction is possible only after the de-occupation of the region and on the condition that there are funds to finance this large-scale project. “The nature of the damage we see is that the power plant is 100% destroyed, it cannot be restored, and after the deoccupation we will have to build a new one,” said Syrota. According to him, the construction of a new hydropower plant will take at least 5 years, and the cost of such a project will reach 1 billion.

| ****| Energy | Environment | Cost | Renewable | Recreation |**** Energy * World-wide, about 20% of all electricity is generated by hydropower. (1) * Hydropower provides about 10% of the electricity in the United States. (1) * The United States is the second largest producer of hydropower in the world. (1) * In Wisconsin, hydropower accounts for 4.1% of the electric generating capacity and 4.4% of the total electricity generated. (2) * Hydropower production in Wisconsin is about 2.1 billion kilowatt hours (kwh) per year. (3) Top of Page Cost * Hydropower is the most efficient way to generate electricity. This is about 50% the cost of nuclear, 40% the cost of fossil fuel, and 25% the cost of using natural gas. This is about one-half the cost of nuclear and one-third the cost of fossil fuel. (1) Top of Page Renewable * Hydropower is the leading source of renewable energy.
