How To Practice Mindfulness While Cleaning House

https://lifewithdee.com/how-to-practice-mindfulness-while-cleaning-house

Sometimes I like to listen to podcasts or daydream while doing routine cleaning. And that’s perfectly fine. But for meditative cleaning focus on the task at hand. Pay attention to the way warm soapy water feels on your hands while washing dishes. Enjoy bringing a gleam to furniture as you slowly buff with beeswax polish. Notice the sparkle of glass as you clean a window. And for a truly meditative experience, polish silver. [...] ### Consider how the simple act of housekeeping blesses you and your family. As you clean, give some thought to what this act means for you and your family. Rather than dreading it as an onerous task, think of what a pleasure it is to live in a clean and organized house. Home should be our place of refuge. When our houses are at least reasonably tidy, comfortable and fresh-smelling, we can truly relax and enjoy spending time there. ### Finish each room with a special touch. [...] ### Do one room at a time. If you’re flitting about from one room to another and then back again, it’s not going to help you maintain a calm, focused mindset. Before you begin, gather all the supplies you will need to clean, and perhaps a basket to gather items which belong elsewhere. Determine whether you will clean for a certain amount of time or until certain tasks are completed and then stick to it. ### Focus on what you are doing.

10 Ways to Practice Mindfulness While Cleaning

https://www.themindfulnessapp.com/articles/practice-mindfulness-while-cleaning

Repetitive cleaning tasks can take on a meditative quality when you shift your focus from the end goal to the process itself. Instead of rushing through chores, slow down and pay attention to each stroke, push, or pull. This simple change can turn an everyday activity into a soothing practice that quiets your thoughts and keeps you grounded in the present. [...] To practice mindfulness while cleaning in a bustling household, pay attention to the physical sensations of the task. Notice the texture of the sponge in your hand or the warmth of the water as you wash. Pair your actions with slow, purposeful breaths to keep yourself grounded. If you're interrupted, try to embrace it as part of the experience and calmly bring your focus back to the task without letting frustration creep in. If you need a little extra help, guided meditations can be a great way [...] Set an Intention: Begin with a purpose, like creating a peaceful space or practicing gratitude. Focus on Breathing: Sync your breath with your movements to stay grounded. Engage Your Senses: Notice textures, sounds, and scents while cleaning. Turn Movements into Meditation: Pay attention to repetitive motions like wiping or sweeping. Observe Thoughts: Acknowledge distractions without judgment and refocus on the task.

Five Ways to Declutter Your Body and Mind

https://www.mindful.org/five-ways-to-declutter-your-body-and-mind

Sometimes it seems like all I can do to calm down, to declutter, to make space, is to flow with breath and body through a sequence of yoga poses. Sometimes I go from downward dog to plank to upward dog and back. Sometimes I start from a Warrior II pose then straighten my front leg in sync my breath, which is also now in sync to my hands moving from out to the sides to above my head. (Try these 10 yoga poses to practice before meditation.) ### 2. Listen to/sing your favorite song [...] Here’s the thing though, just as we need to declutter our physical surroundings, we need to declutter from the inside-out. Literally, we need to spring clean and give our neural circuitry the room to grow. The brain is now known to be a neuroplastic entity (see my recent Mindful.org post for more on that: “How the Brain Changes When You Meditate“). It is no longer static and we can change the neurofunctional space that all the crud and chaos seemed to take up. [...] When I wake up in the morning, before the sun comes up, and stumble to my espresso machine, bleary eyed and still ridiculously tired, a neat space seems to beckon me to use my time in the way I so desire. I try to wake up early to practice mindfulness, set an intention for the day, and then either finish patient notes from the day before, or do some writing—although I’d like this to happen more regularly than it does, I am gentle with myself when it doesn’t.
