Peace of Mind: Household Chores with Mindfulness

https://www.artofliving.org/us-en/peace-of-mind-household-chores-with-mindful…

Breathing deeply and diaphragmatically is an excellent place to start when applying mindfulness to household chores. While doing any task, whether ironing or washing dishes, become aware of your breathing. Often, when we lose track of our breath, breathing becomes shallow. Repetitive tasks, such as dishwashing, provide the opportunity to become aware of breath for an extended period, filling our bodies with fresh oxygen and connecting us to the present moment. ### 2. Mindful body [...] Extend your feet and plant them firmly on the ground, bending from the hips rather than from the back. Soon, you may find yourself entering the flow of ironing, breathing deeply, with hips bending as you flex and stretch. The hour of ironing will pass without you even realizing it! [...] While washing dishes, as you feel the warm water flowing, notice without judgment the thoughts that come and go. Each time you notice your mind wandering, bring your awareness back to the task of dishwashing. This practice will help you cultivate the power to be aware of your inner world while engaging in mindful activity. 1. Pay attention to your senses: Notice the sensation of the warm water on your hands or the sound of the clothes rustling as you fold them. It sounds silly, but it helps us to forget about other things and to be present in the moment. 2. Focus on your breathing: Take deep breaths and focus on the sensation of each inhale and exhale. This can help you to calm your mind and reduce stress. [...] 3. Practice gratitude: Express gratitude for the objects you're handling and the role they play in your life, such as a warm and cozy blanket or a well-loved cup. 4. Use intention: Set an intention for your task, such as to bring order to your home or to show care for yourself and your belongings. Yes, you are doing things that need to be done, but if we change our mindset slightly, we are working towards a goal and that creates a wonderful sense of accomplishment. [...] 5. Be present: Instead of allowing your mind to wander, try to stay focused on the task at hand. By practicing mindfulness during these routine tasks, you can turn them into opportunities for relaxation and stress reduction, and find peace and contentment in the present moment. https://www.headspace.com/content/mindful-activity/housework/110

Hi, and welcome to the Headspace housework exercise. So the beauty of mindfulness is that we can apply it to everything and anything that we do in life and housework is, or for most of us, it's probably not that enjoyable. But if we see it more as an opportunity to train the mind it actually becomes a very pleasant thing to do. So as we're doing it, of course still allowing thoughts to come and go, but bringing our attention to the act of cleaning or vacuuming or washing, whatever it is at the [...] much as possible, just putting those things aside, putting them down for a moment and giving your full attention to whatever activity, whatever type of housework you're about to begin. Could be washing the dishes, could be cleaning up, might be laundry. It could be ironing, vacuuming. We all tend to have certain preferences and often we kind of approach housework just wanting to get past it. So the way to begin this exercise is by taking a couple of nice, big, deep breaths. So if you do this by [...] the intention of being mindful throughout. Of course, we'll lose our attention at times. That's perfectly normal. As soon as you do, just see it, acknowledge it, let the thoughts go and bring the attention back to whatever sensation or to whatever sense is most prevalent at the time. So if you're washing the dishes it might be the feeling of warmth and moisture. Your hands in the water. If you're ironing, it might be the weight of the iron or the movement of the hand extending and then coming
