things I want or need to do. Mindfully completing a simple household task can be like skipping a pebble on a pond, sending ripples of Zen into the day. If you’re also interested in forming a mindfulness practice in your home, I recommend the following: 1. Let your bed set the tone for the day. Making the bed is sort of a no-brainer for me. Leaving it unmade feels as unnatural as leaving my house without pants. However, I know it can be tempting to leave the sheets and blankets crumpled to jump [...] I liked this post very much. I have often found satisfaction in housework and your exercises reminded me to practice this more often. But, I am with you on the cooking and wondered why I can’t bring a meditative approach to it like the cleaning. I think it’s because cooking requires more skill and I am afraid of doing it wrong. Maybe I can try to make some soup this fall and just be present with the ingredients, aroma, texture, etc., and not worry so much about results. Thank you for this. [...] be calming and even gratifying when you throw yourself into them completely. After an hour of cutting—my boyfriend planned an ambitious Mexican meal for my family, who we’re visiting—I felt almost as relaxed as I do after yoga. Okay, so the mid-prep margarita may have contributed to my mellow state, but I’m convinced the chopping had a lot to do with it. I’ve decided to get more deliberate with my household tasks; to actually schedule them, instead of squeezing them between things I want or

Hi, and welcome to the Headspace housework exercise. So the beauty of mindfulness is that we can apply it to everything and anything that we do in life and housework is, or for most of us, it's probably not that enjoyable. But if we see it more as an opportunity to train the mind it actually becomes a very pleasant thing to do. So as we're doing it, of course still allowing thoughts to come and go, but bringing our attention to the act of cleaning or vacuuming or washing, whatever it is at the [...] much as possible, just putting those things aside, putting them down for a moment and giving your full attention to whatever activity, whatever type of housework you're about to begin. Could be washing the dishes, could be cleaning up, might be laundry. It could be ironing, vacuuming. We all tend to have certain preferences and often we kind of approach housework just wanting to get past it. So the way to begin this exercise is by taking a couple of nice, big, deep breaths. So if you do this by [...] the intention of being mindful throughout. Of course, we'll lose our attention at times. That's perfectly normal. As soon as you do, just see it, acknowledge it, let the thoughts go and bring the attention back to whatever sensation or to whatever sense is most prevalent at the time. So if you're washing the dishes it might be the feeling of warmth and moisture. Your hands in the water. If you're ironing, it might be the weight of the iron or the movement of the hand extending and then coming

Yes, even household chores can be turned into mindful moments!
🧘Mindfulness isn't just something you practice during meditation—any activity can be mindful when you focus on the motions and sensations.
When cleaning, you can practice this by fully engaging yourself in the task while appreciating the care you're giving to your space. [...] When you're out on a walk, focus on the sensation of your feet touching the ground, the rhythm of your breath, and the sights and sounds around you.
Create opportunities for calm, clarity, and connection, no matter how busy life gets. 🌿

Essentially, you can use the time spent doing chores as a mini meditative session to promote your own mindfulness. The key is to focus on what your doing and what it feels like in each moment. They have to get done, so why not get more out of your chores?

Patrick Allan [...] > Mindful dishwashers evidenced greater state mindfulness, increases in elements of positive affect (i.e., inspiration), decreases in elements of negative affect (i.e., nervousness), and overestimations of dishwashing time. Implications for these findings are diverse and suggest that mindfulness as well as positive affect could be cultivated through intentionally engaging in a broad range of activities. Mindfulness is both a practice and a state of mind that revolves around having more presence, attention, and focus. The next time you do some menial chores around the house, kill two birds with one stone and meditate while you do them.

By applying mindfulness to “boring” tasks, I’ll hopefully highlight the benefit of practicing present moment awareness. With that in mind, below are three mindful exercises I’d like you to try. I’ve chosen these three activities because they’re the kind we generally undertake on autopilot. We like to get them “out of the way.” But remember, any moment spent wanting to get out of the way, or to move beyond, is a moment wasted. So, on we go…
#### Mindful Exercise 1: Showering [...] Notice the thought that springs to mind as you look at the dirty cutlery (“Ugh, there’s loads, this’ll take a while”). Take a few deep breaths.
Instead of seeing this is a mountain to overcome, focus on each item without rushing through. Notice any thought related to time or frustration at how long the process will take.
Give all of your attention to the item currently you’re currently holding: How heavy is it? How hard do you have to scrub to remove the stains? Is it smooth? Rough? [...] Notice the scent of the washing up liquid and the formation of the foam.
Tune in to the sound of the running water, the unique clunk of each plate as you place it in the drying rack.
Notice the temperature of the water.
Celebrate being mindful. And having clean dishes.

Gather items around the house of varying textures and put them in a paper bag. Have your child reach in and explore the items through touch. You can support your child being mindful by prompting them with questions such as: Is it hard or soft? Are there edges? Ask your child to describe what they are feeling.
## 7. Practice yoga [...] This can seem like a difficult concept to introduce to kids. But, there are many activities kids can do at home that incorporate moments of mindfulness in fun, educational and creative ways. Whether your child is showing signs they feel anxious or settling into new routines well, Lurie Children’s Art Therapist Giuseppina Impellizzeri has rounded up some simple and creative ways to encourage mindfulness:
## 1. Practice intentional breathing [...] Being mindful can be simple, but it’s not always easy. Through each mindfulness activity, focus on doing one thing at a time. Take time to turn off any distractions, check in with your child and allow them to feel whatever emotion they are having. Whether you practice deep breathing or explore outside, encourage your child to share how they are feeling in the moment with questions like: How are you feeling? Where are you having feelings in your body? What do you need right now? What are you

Lie down or sit comfortably. If you lie down, lie on your back with your legs extended, arms at your sides, palms facing up. Sit up straight if you're sitting. Breathe in a long, deep, slow breath through your nose, then breathe out through your mouth. Keep breathing deeply. Move your attention slowly through each part of your body. Start at your head and work your way down through your toes. Or start at your toes and work up through your head. Notice anything your body is feeling, such as [...] There are many ways to practice mindfulness. You can be mindful during everyday tasks, such as eating or brushing your teeth. Or you can set aside a regular time to practice mindfulness. It can be done alone or in a group. Mindfulness meditation may include breathing methods, guided imagery, and other ways to relax the body and mind.

## What are the benefits of mindfulness meditation? [...] Sit comfortably in a quiet space and close your eyes. Or keep them open if it's more comfortable. Breathe in a long, deep, slow breath through your nose. Breathe out through your mouth. Then repeat this many times. Focus on your breath. Be aware of and present in the moment.
Mindfulness body scan. This common mindfulness exercise helps you notice what your body is feeling. A mindful body scan can lessen tension and bring a sense of calm. It also can help raise body awareness and appreciation.

My house needs a deep clean again.
I promise you I cleaned it a week ago.
It will always amaze me how quickly crap can accumulate in such a short amount of time. [...] To be entirely fair, my house isn’t that dirty, but it already feels out of sorts. And when you know what something looks like at its best and most optimal state, anything less just feels plain wrong.
Wrong like sitting down to work with a mound of laundry staring at you or a dusty surface teasing you with its frothiness. [...] Now I feel compelled to wipe down that surface if only to eliminate it as a distraction. But once I do, I will find 5 more chores to do, and despite my efforts to procrastinate productively, I will be stressed out because I have so many chores that endlessly repeat themselves and distract me from my actual job.
