Often, we are focused solely on completing a task to see the final result. In mindful cleaning, the journey is just as important as the destination. Embrace each step of the process without fixating on the end goal.
### 6. Be Present with Your Thoughts
While cleaning, you may notice that your mind begins to wander. When this happens, gently guide your attention back to the task at hand. Acknowledge your thoughts without judgment and then refocus on the physical act of cleaning. [...] ### 4. Slow Down
Instead of rushing through your cleaning tasks, slow down and take your time. Allow each action to be deliberate and mindful. For example, if you are sweeping the floor, pay attention to each stroke of the broom and how it collects dirt and debris.
### 5. Embrace the Process, Not Just the Outcome [...] #### How to Practice Mindful Cleaning
Here are some practical steps and tips to transform your cleaning routine into a meditative practice:
### 1. Set Your Intentions
Before you start cleaning, take a moment to set your intentions. Decide that you will approach this task mindfully and use it as an opportunity to practice being present.

When you apply mindfulness principles to cleaning and organizing your home, you not only end up doing a better job (unarguably, a clean and organized home feels good), but you learn how to find meaning in mundane chores and ordinary moments. You have to clean anyway, so instead of rushing through the task, use it as an opportunity to practice mindfulness.
This Spring, as you’re de-cluttering, de-wintering, and making your countertops shine, try these mindful approaches to cleaning your home. [...] Introducing a new perspective on cleaning: Mindful cleaning. What if you were to look at the task as a way to practice mindfulness? Instead of racing through the chores, carve out ample time, turn off your phone and other distractions, and find your focus on cleaning—and nothing else—during the time you’ve allotted to clean. [...] ## Sweeping
The repetitive nature of this common household chore may offer you some relaxation, if you can bring your attention to just the recurring actions you’re engaging in. You can also try incorporating a mantra while you sweep—any mantra would work, for example silently saying “May I be happy” as you take one sweeping step, and “May I feel at peace,” as you sweep again. You can get tips on creating a unique mantra in this post I recently wrote.

things I want or need to do. Mindfully completing a simple household task can be like skipping a pebble on a pond, sending ripples of Zen into the day. If you’re also interested in forming a mindfulness practice in your home, I recommend the following: 1. Let your bed set the tone for the day. Making the bed is sort of a no-brainer for me. Leaving it unmade feels as unnatural as leaving my house without pants. However, I know it can be tempting to leave the sheets and blankets crumpled to jump [...] on occasion, and then doing them instead of using energy to avoid them. Cleaning the toilet is right up there with root canals on my fun list, but it won’t clean itself. In accepting this and then doing it—when it needs to be done and no later—I prepare myself to carry this same acceptance outside my house. To stop judging things as good and bad to soften the nagging inner monologue that keeps me divorced from the present. 4. Let your senses take over in the shower. You’ve probably experienced [...] on your hands; let yourself enjoy the experience of making something dirty clean again. Don’t think about finishing or what you’ll do when you’re finished. Focus solely on the doing. Thich Nhat Hanh explained it well in his book The Miracle of Mindfulness: “To my mind, the idea that doing dishes is unpleasant can occur only when you aren’t doing them…I enjoy taking my time with each dish, being fully aware of the dish, the water, and each movement of my hands. I know that if I hurry in order

Cleaning and decluttering, for me, are mindfulness practices. They are not chores that I dread, nor ways to strive for a perfect living environment, but ways to practice living in the present moment. As such, they are some of my favorite things to do. [...] 1. When you clean, just clean. Don’t plan, don’t have your mind on the next task as you’re doing the current task, don’t listen to a podcast or watch TV as you’re doing the task at hand. Just wipe. Just sweep. Just declutter. Just wash, just rinse. [...] 3. Pay attention to your thoughts, body, actions. Practice focusing your attention: on the rag, on the broom, on the dust. But also notice your thoughts: are you thinking about other things? Are you judging others? Are you wishing things were different? Are you angry? Don’t banish the thoughts, but notice them. Then return to the cleaning. Notice too as you clean your body, and your breathing. Notice everything about the moment, immerse yourself in the moment.
