The 2024-25 academic year saw the implementation of the first phase of ESD, where all Foundation and undergraduate students have a core module at each level of study teaching holistic sustainable development through the use of the SDGs, connecting this learning to their discipline and reinforcing it all through authentic assessment. # UK and the Sustainable Development Goals
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by 193 UN member states at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in 2015. It provides an ambitious, globally-agreed, shared blueprint for the world we want to see by 2030 and is centred around the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (also known as the Global Goals or SDGs). [...] The Sustainable Development Goals are underpinned by 169 targets which address a wide range of issues facing both developed and developing countries. These interconnected issues include poverty, inequality, climate change, inclusive societies and access to health and education. A central commitment of the Goals is to Leave No One Behind, ensuring that development progress reaches the most vulnerable and marginalised populations. [...] The SDGs apply to all countries, with all sectors playing a role in supporting their delivery. The UK is responsible for achieving the Goals domestically and for supporting their attainment internationally.

In 2024, the United Nations released a report stating that only 17% of the SDG targets were on track. In the United Nations' 2025 Sustainability Development Goals Report it was stated that only 35% of the SDG targets "were on track or making moderate progress", with nearly half moving "too slowly" and 18% of the targets were actually "in reverse", warning that the current pace of change is insufficient to fully achieve all of the Goals by the 2030 deadline. The UK's approach to delivering the Global SDGs is outlined in Agenda 2030: Delivering the Global Goals, developed by the Department for International Development. In 2019, the Bond network analyzed the UK's global progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Bond report highlights crucial gaps where attention and investment are most needed. The report was compiled by 49 organizations and 14 networks and working groups.
