Aerodynamic and Vibration Characteristics of Iced Power Transmission Conductors in a Nonuniform Wind Field Based on Unsteady Theory. permission is required to reuse all or part of the article published by MDPI, including figures and tables. This paper investigates the aeroelastic behaviour of a full wind turbine model with realistic blade vibration amplitude (9% span) using a nonlinear frequency-domain solution method. The primary objective is to demonstrate the computational efficiency of this method for an aeroelastic analysis compared to resource-intensive time-domain approaches. The frequency-domain method was then validated against a conventional time-domain method, comparing aerodynamic damping and unsteady pressure distributions, with strong agreement observed. Results show a more complex unsteady pressure distribution at 324.5 RPM compared to 424.5 RPM, directly affecting aerodynamic damping. Aeroelastic analyses of a wind turbine with a relatively large amplitude blade structural oscillation at different rotational speeds are performed using the nonlinear frequency-domain method in this paper.

[PDF] Aeroelastic Modeling of Large Offshore Vertical-axis Wind Turbines

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics 1 Aeroelastic Modeling of Large Offshore Vertical-axis Wind Turbines: Development of the Offshore Wind Energy Simulation Toolkit Brian C. Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are potentially ideal candidates for offshore applications, with many apparent advantages over the horizontal-axis wind turbine configuration in the offshore arena. Thus, the Offshore Wind ENergy Simulation (OWENS) toolkit is being developed as a design tool for assessing innovative floating VAWT configurations. Verification and validation exercises are discussed, and comparisons to experimental data for the Sandia National Laboratories 34-meter VAWT test bed are presented. A discussion and demonstration of a “loose” coupling approach to external loading modules, which allows a greater degree of modularity, is given. Results for a realistic VAWT structure on a floating platform under aerodynamic loads are shown and coupling between platform and turbine motions is demonstrated. Analysis results for a realistic VAWT structure under aerodynamic loads for fixed and floating foundations are presented and the coupling between VAWT and platform motions is demonstrated.
